CBCP thumbs down sex education program for bishops
11/19/2008 | 08:40 PM

MANILA, Philippines - The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Wednesday rejected the proposal made by a party-list congressman for the clergy to undergo sex education program.

CBCP spokesperson Msgr. Pedro Quitorio said there is no need for the bishops to undergo such an orientation since they are well versed on the matter.

“The Church is more knowledgeable about human sexuality as it even has a lot of documents about it more than what our congressmen might actually have,” he said.

The proposal was made by Rep. Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel, one of the principal authors of the controversial reproductive health bill that the Catholic Church is vehemently opposing.

Hontiveros made the proposal in view of the CBCP’s recent call for more dialogue with the lawmakers on the said bill currently pending at the House of Representatives.

But Quitorio said the Church has long been administering sex education to Catholic schools.

“Actually the Church has long been giving sex education to Catholic schools, and these bishops have been presidents or owners of these schools,” Quitorio told reporters in an interview.

Unlike the sex education being pushed by the pro-reproductive health bill lawmakers, Quitorio said the sex education being given by the Catholic Church focuses on human sexuality.

“Theirs is very limited. It should be the whole human sexuality. That’s where the difference lies,” said Quitorio.

In a recent pastoral statement entitled “Standing up for the Gospel of Life,” the CBCP said that the reproductive health bill pending in Congress make a number of good points because it tackles the issues relative to maternal, infant and child health and nutrition, promotion of breastfeeding, adolescent and youth health, elimination of violence against women, among others.

"But the bill as it stands now contains fatal flaws which if not corrected will make the bill unacceptable,” the statement said. - GMANews.TV

Mass actions vs RH bill unnecessary — CBCP
11/21/2008 | 09:23 PM

MANILA, Philippines - The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said that it would focus on forums instead of mass protests against the reproductive health bill or HB 5043, which it believes are unnecessary.

CBCP Episcopal Commission on Family and Life executive secretary Fr. Melvin Castro said that the church has all the support it needs to block the controversial bill from passage and that there is no need for mass action.

"We are not contemplating of any mass actions or mass protests because we view that it’s not necessary," said Mr. Castro.

He added that forums are better because it allows speakers to back up their positions intelligently.

The CBCP said that it is gathering support from lawmakers and are conducting dialogues with them to explain the position of the Church regarding the HB 5043.

The CBCP announced last week that it would hold dialogues with the bill’s proponents in hopes of changing a few provisions the Church deems unacceptable. - BusinessWorld

IF I DON'T BELIEVE IN CHURCH, I DON'T BELIEVE IN GOD, - ha! teka! ganun ba yon! parang sinabi mo na diyos ang simbahan. Ako, I strongly believe and had faith in God pero hindi ako believe sa sinasabi mong Church.

Not necessarily ganon. But Jesus created that CHURCH so that His flock will stay intact and He put guidelines on that church for his flocks to follow.

Yes, dumadami na nga, and what I think that the government should work on more is EDUCATION, not just SEX EDUCATION but EDUCATION as a whole.

haayyy!!!!

malaki ang benepisyo ang makukuha natin sa Reproductive Health Bill......my point is...
1. limted numbers in the family "if" d mo kaya bumuhay ng malaking pamilya.(lets do the math here.....less income = limited numbers for your family... more income or super rich = its up you how many members you would consider in your family )
4. controlled population means lots of jobs out there...d mo na kailangan mangibang bansa para mg trabaho...
5. sa Reproductive Health Bill liliit na ang porsyento ng pghihirap sa mga taong dadaan....at kung manyayari man yun, in the near future wla ng maghihirap...

I'm in favor of this particular bill as long as it will promote the good welfare of the Filipino citizen and it will not abuse morality within the scope of spiritual, social and political sphere.

Sexual relations between husband and wife are a God-given gift. But procreation is not their sole purpose. Sexual relations also allow a married couple to express tenderness and affection for each another. So if a couple should decide to exclude the possibility of a pregnancy by using some form of contraception, that is their choice to make, and no one should judge them..
