Manila, Philippines – Anino Games, Inc. (AGI), an award-winning game development studio known for pioneering the third-party game development in the Philippines, was raided by the National Bureau of Investigation’s Anti-Fraud and Computer Crimes Division (NBI-AFCCD) for alleged use of pirated design software.
AGI’s game developers and employees were caught by surprise as agents of the NBI-AFCCD swooped down on their office located at the 14th floor of Vernida 4 Building along L.P. Leviste Street in Salcedo Village, Makati City. The raiding team was armed with search warrant issued by the Manila Regional Trial Court.
“Anino Games, which is capable of developing world-class games and enjoys global recognition for its original intellectual property (IP) creations, is now itself in the hot seat for suspected infringement of the IP of multimedia & entertainment software companies which they have been using to run their business,” said Director 1 Vicente De Guzman, chief of the NBI-AFCCD.
“We acknowledge that seizure of computers will cause the company’s operation to stop, but we are mandated by the law to take these computers as evidence. Companies should realize that using pirated software exposes their business not only to security risks but also to risks of being raided and ultimately loss in productivity,” De Guzman said.
Software piracy is a violation of the Intellectual Property (IP) Code of the Philippines and is punishable by up to nine years imprisonment and a fine of up to P1.5 million.
AGI has become popular for releasing the first Filipino-made game, Anito: Defend a Land Enraged, which has placed the country on the game industry world map. Anito has won numerous international awards including those from the Independent Games Festival 2004. Other award-winning games produced by AGI include Anima Wars (International Mobile Gaming Awards 2006), Anito: Tersiago’s Wrath (Nokia Series60 challenge, Singapore 2003), Deep Interactive Pursuit (Best Casual Game nominee in the 2007 International Mobile Gaming Awards) and Word Archery (Indie Game Showcase 2007).More information on AGI is available at their website, http://aninogames.com.
During the raid, the NBI agents were able to seize 36 computers loaded with pirated copies of various multimedia and entertainment software including 3D Studio Max® 2008, 3D Studio Max® 9, AutoDesk® Maya 8.5, AutoCAD® 2008, AutoDesk® Maya 2008 and Combustion® 4. Pirated installers of the software mentioned were also found in AGI’s server.
The software piracy complaint against AGI was filed by Autodesk, Inc., a software company specializing in multimedia, entertainment and design innovation technology. Autodesk, Inc is a member of the Business Software Alliance (BSA). The BSA has been a staunch supporter of the government’s fight against software piracy in the coordinated effort of the Pilipinas Anti-Piracy Team (PAPT) composed of the NBI, the Optical Media Board and the Philippine National Police.
As part of its support to the PAPT, the BSA offers a reward of up to one million pesos to anyone who provides information leading to a successful action and prosecution against a business establishment using unlicensed and pirated software. Informants can submit their report through BSA’s hotline numbers, (02) 895-6438 and 1-800-10-BSA-HTLN (1-800-10-272-4856, toll-free).
