Norwood or nothing for Rain or Shine
By: Zean Macamay
RAIN or Shine has long thought and decided that Gabe Norwood is the player it wants and needs.
The team that will pick No. 1 in the PBA Annual Draft on Sunday has remained firm that it will keep Norwood for good and perhaps make him the cornerstone of the franchise in the near future, closing the door on any trade offers that has reportedly come from two giant ball clubs.
“It’s our pick, he’s not for sale,” said Terry Que, co-owner of Rain or Shine, formerly Welcoat.
If everything goes well for Norwood in today’s deadline for Fil-foreign applicants, the Elasto Painters will have in their fold a player polished by international competitions and one could transform Rain or Shine from also-rans into contenders.
“Kung ibibigay namin si Norwood, dapat nuon pa naisip na namin,” said Que.
Norwood is reportedly being sought by Talk ‘N Text and by the San Miguel group of teams. Rain or Shine, however, has emphatically already closed the door on trade talks.
Obviously, Phone Pals coach Chot Reyes is the man seeking the services of Norwood, having mentored him while Norwood played in the national team in the FIBA Asia Qualifying Championships in Tokushima, Japan last year.
The only problem Rain or Shine has at this moment is whether Norwood will be able to beat the deadline at 12 noon today set by the PBA. Norwood has yet to submit any of the two documents the league requires.
Norwood will have to present a Department of Justice (DoJ) certificate of affirmation and a certificate coming from the Bureau of Immigration and Deportation. A reliable source, however, said that the documents are already processed and will be submitted today at the PBA office.
Another Fil-foreign — Jared Dillinger — has yet to complete his documents. Dillinger, a Fil-German who is expected to be picked No. 2 by Talk ‘N Text, still has to submit his DoJ affirmation papers.
The list of 47 applicants, however, is expected to be trimmed down once the Commissioner’s Office has completely screened the requirements submitted by all prospective rookies just before Draft Day.
Of the four Fil-foreign bred players, Norwood, the 6-foot-5 guard out of George Mason University who played for the national team in three international tournaments last year, and Dillinger are considered among this year’s first round draftees.
The Phone Pals will also pick no. 4 followed by Alaska (5), Air21 (6), Purefoods (7), Air21 (8), Barangay Ginebra (9) and Sta. Lucia (10).
Other noted talents out of this year’s rookie batch include former national players Jeff Chan, Jonathan Fernandez, Beau Belga, Rob Reyes, TY Tang, Mark Borboran, Kelvin Gregorio, Cholo Villanueva, NCAA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Kelvin dela Pena, Kelvin Delafu, Pong Escobal, Larry Rodriguez, Patrick Cabahug, Christian Espiritu and Lawrence Bonus.
Majority of the applicants saw action in the traditional Rookie Camp held at the Emilio Aguinaldo College gym last August 22-23.
Completing the 47-man list approved so far by the Commissioner’s Office are Ryan Regalado, Mark Anthony Cuevas, Andrew Catigan, Diomar Facum, Michael Dizon, Ismael Junio, Christian Reyes, Angelus Raymundo, Eian Yu, Dennis Concha, Frankly Nailon, Michael Gonzales, Mark Yee, Rene Cunanan, Eder Saldua, Nestor David, Earn Saguindel, Nizar Kiram, Ferdinand Melocoton, Juan Luis Abad, Christian Cabatu, Nathaniel Cruz, Lei Mar Navarro, Jan Coching, Michael Olino, Chito Jaime and Ricky Natividad.

No takers so far for Phone Pals Carey, Washington
BY NOLI CORTEZ
MACAU — Unless some teams take a nibble at a pair of baits Talk N Text has dangled, the Phone Pals will be forced to make hard decisions before the next PBA season starts in October.
With the PBA Board members heading back home Thursday after finishing their directional meeting here Wednesday, the Phone Pals still have to find any takers for forwards Jay Washington and Harvey Carey who are on the trading block.
The Phone Pals are hard-pressed to unload at least one of the five Fil-Ams in their roster before they can tab US-born Jared Dillinger in the PBA Rookie Draft on Sunday at the Market! Market! in Taguig.
