Liga Filipina, Liga Pilipinas, eaLa Liga Pilipinas
LINK

And so after the storm, it looks like Layman Noli Eala is back on track.

He is said to be the “Guiding Force” behind a soon to be launched league, Liga Filipina. A SBP sanctioned regional league. AKA, MBA all-over again. Whoa, from being disbarred to now the “guiding force” of a new national league, quick ricochet for Layman Eala.

The name alone tickles, LIGA FILIPINA.

IMHO, I prefer it to be called “LIGA PILIPINAS” to throw away the Spanish tang. Also, LIGA PILIPINAS is in harmony with body “Samahang Basketball sa Pilipinas.” Also, not being narrow minded here, but I don’t like the idea of masculine guys playing in a league called Liga Filipina.

To the topic…

From my now-buddy Quinito Henson’s article, league’s backers are Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno, Michel Lhuillier, Joe Soberano, Yayoy Alcoseba, Tito Palma, Tac Padilla and Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham Tolentino. The prime movers are still thin for a planned national cage fest but I know as soon as the ball starts rolling, many will join the club. Most especially, the RE-ELECTIONINST local government officials. Asus, they will ALL be on board.

Surely, Layman Noli Eala wants to talk to me and get some inputs but he’s afraid that I’ll turn him down because I am a PBA guy. And so, Commish-Not-Commish-Now-Commish again Noli Eala, here are my beefcase with ten suggestions:

(1) Ronnie Nathalielz now has a lot of beef with the PBA, the board, Chairman Tony Chua, heck even the Solar Sports handling of the opening ceremonies. Noli Eala can get the services of Ronnie Nathalielz and his outfit, VIVA-Vintage to have some part in this league.

(2) Easy with the targets. Do NOT do the MBA way. The ABS CBN way of, you-didn’t-give-us-PBA-coverage-huh-take-this-MBA-league way. Not only will Eala be perceived as taking shots at PBA, but setting up overblown goals will be its biggest mistake. Stay away from PBA in the toddler years. Noli Eala said he has 4 year plan to make the Liga Filipina on an irreversible success by year 4. Irreversible success means taking on the PBA in year 4. That means, he aims to be on a head-on collision with the PBA and the group that hastily asked him to retire because of fear of fans’ backslash.

(3) If ever ABS-CBN joins the club as coveror (via Studio 23), a partner or whatever, give little control as to what they would bring to the table. ABS-CBN doesn’t have the Midas touch nowadays. Look at the trend, ABS-CBN projects seem to be produced because they want pay back and because of rivalries and not really based on sincere drive to help develop grassroots basketball.

(4) Start small and work the ladder. I read somewhere that 10 teams are sure balls, so to speak. And that, 16 teams are planned. The already thin in talent NBC and MVBA will not produce great games if the players are inter-town leagues caliber.

(5) The league is sanctioned by SBP eh and the idea of Patrick Gregorio? Then, IMPLEMENT FIBA RULES ALL THE WAY FROM DAY ONE TO ETERNITY.

(6) I know National Basketball Conference and Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (backbones from which the teams and the org will rise) players’ salaries don’t compare with their PBA counterparts, but a P30,000 maximum salary proposed is just too low. If I am one good player being eyed by La Liga Eala, and I happen to speak good English and I have patience wider than the Pacific Ocean, I’ll just apply as call center agent. How may I help you sir. Just practicing.

(7) I say a salary of P50000 looks good and reasonable. P75,000 is quite tempting for a so-so player in the PBA to dive in the eaLA-LIGA-FILIPINA and be the star player in Romblon or Dumaguete City or Tuguegarao or Calbayog City or Basilan or Davao. Where, they’ll be local superstar and more opportunities would come like endorsements and under the table bonuses from local basketball godfathers and local officials.

(8) Just don’t hire Ramon Fernandez now. Let the man regain some of his elegant shots before he enters any national league or programs. He is the equivalent of Isiah Thomas here in the PBA. Fernandez is struggling to make a career after his majestic PBA career.

(9) Make it two conference format and four divisions. The GMA, Luzon, Visayas and the Mindanao Divisions. With North and South conferences. Just like in the NBA. To save logistics and all that, that sent MBA to the ground, teams bracketed in the same division and conference will meet each other more. So, they don’t need to plane in game after game. This way, the handy Victory Liner will do. Philippine Rabbit too. See, in case a team from Manila Pick Pocketers battles the San Juan Quenchers, they need not book a Philippine Airlines flight, they will just use G-Liner line via the Rizal Trip. Given that they want to save huh, players will commute using non-airconditioned G-Liners. See, lucky them if ever Cainta (Pasig - Rizal) establishes a team, Manila players will again use G-Liner going to Cainta Rizal fo an away-game. <--Joke alert. By having divisons too, regional rivalries will be established like that of Cebu versus Negros.

(10) Noli Eala, a former broadcaster, MUST hire a decent cast of TV analysts. He can't possibly employ inter-barangay commentators and announcers. Player A passes to player B, player B passes to player C, player C shoots. What a shot!

Additonal advice that I’d like to share to Layman Noli Eala…

a. Stay away from the business of giving monickers to Liga Filipina players. I don’t want him repeating the “The Mobiline Kangaroo” (a moniker he gave to Andy Seigle) he tried to pull in 1997.

b. For Layman Noli Eala, don’t ever, i mean never ever consider that three-point dunk again.

c. Hire me as an special assistant for matters concerning LOVE and marital affairs. Call me – 1-800-BENHUR-DR-LOVE.

Bonus, some prospects…

I. I see Rommel Adducul requesting a trade for him to be sent to Manila Metro Stars. He badly misses the MBA days and he loves the San Andres Gym soooo much.

II. Don Don Hontiveros, in 2 years, his PT over at player packed San Miguel Beer will decline. He’ll finish off his career at Cebu playing for well, the Cebu Gems. (99.999 per cent sure, Cebu City will have one team.)

III. My favorite, Alex Compton will see action again perhaps as a playing coach for the Manila team. More of “this could happen in the Liga Pilipinas” entry later…

You got suggestions on how to make this LIGA PILIPINAS more viable?

Busy sked for Noli
SPORTING CHANCE By Joaquin M. Henson
Thursday, February 28, 2008

Former PBA commissioner Noli Eala has a plateful of things to do now that he’s the captain of the good ship Third Force.

Since leaving the PBA, Eala never expected to be this busy. But he’s not complaining. If there’s such a thing, Eala is pleasantly harassed.

Aside from attending to his sports projects, Eala is attending to his flourishing food store – ”Bread All Day” – in front of Mt. Carmel Church along Broadway Avenue and a flower shop called “Blooms in Breezes.” He’s also working on upgrading a family-owned resort in Los Baños.

Then, there’s the big triple world championship boxing card in Dubai he’s staging on April 18.

At the moment, Eala said he’s putting the finishing touches on Liga Pilipinas which is envisioned to be a home-and-away circuit, like the defunct MBA, with teams all over the country.

“There are 26 applicants for franchises and we’ll screen them down to 16 which is the number we’re looking at for our first season,” said Eala. “The deadline for the submission of applications is March 5 then we’ll decide the teams by March 15. By April 15, we’ll finalize the lineups and by April 29, we’ll get the show on the road.”

Eala said the league will not include a Metro Manila team.

“We’ll limit each team to two ex-pros in our first year and one in our second year because we aim to be developmental,” explained Eala. “But a team will be allowed to go over the limit if the ex-pros are included in the maximum of eight homegrown players in a 14-man lineup. Homegrown players are defined as those who were born in the place hosting the team, those who live there and those who trace lineage to the place.”

Eala said Fil-Ams are welcome in Liga Pilipinas and he plans a dispersal draft to give each team a crack at the pool.

“We’re playing strictly FIBA rules and in the playoffs, we intend to bring in two FIBA referees from overseas,” he continued. “We’re scheduling 175 games in a conference, more than in the PBA, and 380 games in a season. We’ll run two conferences of four months each. We’ll do quadruple headers four playing days a week so we’ll be extremely busy.”

Eala said he is in the process of negotiating a TV contract for the league.

“We’re meeting with three networks,” he disclosed. “We’ll probably sign up one network for games in the North and another network for games in the South. When the playoffs come around, we’ll work out a distribution arrangement. The league will maintain two headquarters, one in Manila and another in Cebu.”

So far, Eala said he has been able to locate sponsors pledging P12 million to support the league.

“The upside is tremendous,” said Eala. “We’ve got interested parties in Cebu, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga, General Santos City, Tacloban, Tagbilaran City, Tagaytay, Batangas, Baguio City, Ilocos Sur, Pampanga, Taguig and many more. Henkel-Sista is thinking of adopting Taguig. Mayor Bautista is taking care of Baguio. Gil Cortez is coordinating Pampanga. The league has enormous potential.”

mukhang tuloy na tuloy na itong Liga Pilipinas... magandang oportunidad ito para sa mga homegrown talents..

saka super busy na nga si Eala.. with his track record, i'm LP will be a success.. but i don't think it would surpass the PBA even in 10 years time..

La Liga opens April 29
By Joel Orellana
Reporter

THE Basketball Association of the Philippines-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) is launching in April the Liga Pilipinas, a league that will feature teams from local government units.

The BAP-SBP has tentatively set April 29 as the opening of the tournament, which will be handled by former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) commissioner Noli Eala.

BAP-SBP executive director Patrick Gregorio said they expect as many as 16 teams to join the tournament.

“A lot of provinces are signifying their intentions to join like Cebu wants to field two teams and Ilocos Sur, Pampanga and Baguio are very keen on forming their team,” said Gregorio.

“In fact, our BAP-SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan is also mulling to bankroll the Pampanga squad because he’s a Capampangan. Marami ngang naiinggit sa Pampanga because MVP is supporting the team,” he added.

The Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association and National Basketball Confederation have merged to form the core of the new basketball league.

Gregorio said they intend to discover new talent from the countryside through the Liga Pilipinas in as much the same way as what the defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) did.

“The BAP-SBP believes that there are still many talents na hindi pa natin nata-tap. And this is the primary goal of this league—maghanap ng magagaling na basketball players sa buong bansa and provide them the experience they need through this Liga Pilipinas,” said Gregorio.

The BAP-SBP, Gregorio clarified, will not be competing with the PBA. In 1998 the MBA was formed through the backing of television giant ABS-CBN but folded up four years later because of funding woes.

==================================

Mukhang sigurado na talaga ang team ng Pampanga... Ayos!

May salary cap yan syempre...
