Sam Ekwe will play for Laguna Stallions

PASIG CITY -- The Laguna Stallions bolstered their bid in the coming Liga Pilipinas Conference by snaring two-time NCAA Most Valuable Player Samuel Ekwe of San Beda College in a special lottery conducted this afternoon (January 6).

Ekwe, a 6'8" Nigerian exchange student greatly responsible for his school's current string of three straight NCAA championships, has exhausted his varsity eligibility and expressed his desire to play for Liga Pilipinas. The Liga board granted his request and also opened the door in the future for full-blooded foreigners who studied in Philippine schools to see action in the league. To be fair, Ekwe was required to go through a lottery.

The Stallions, represented by head coach Nomar Isla had eight chips in the weighted drawing presided over by Commissioner Noli Eala. Last conference's doormat the Zamboanga Amores had the most chances with 13 chips. Champion Cebu Ninos and expansion club MP Warriors of GenSan had the least chances with one chip each.

The chips were allotted according to the teams' performance. Eala announced that the team that draws Ekwe will be obligated to sign him and will not be allowed to trade or assign him.

Coach Isla was all smiles as Eala drew the Stallions' chip. "Sam will be a big part of the Stallions' campaign and he will be a good attraction for the league as a whole," said Coach Isla after shaking hands with his latest recruit.

Liga Pilipinas opens on January 14 with the Stallions travelling to General Santos City to play the host Warriors, Ilocos Sur Bravehearts and Amores in the first of 11 pocket tournaments.
