Pacquiao to carry Philippine flag at Olympics
Manila Times
5 July 2008 | 12:40 AM

Boxing icon Manny PacMan Pacquiao has been chosen to carry the Philippine flag at the opening parade of next months Beijing Olympics, despite being a professional athlete and unable to fight in the 2008 Games.

President Gloria Arroyo announced on Friday that she was designating the fighter, who won a fourth world title in a fourth weight class last month, as special envoy to the Beijing Olympics, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita told reporters Friday.

Pacquiaos designation as flag-bearer seemed to have been well received by Mark Joseph, the president of the Philippine Amateur Swimming Association.

Earlier, the association recommended to the Philippine Olympic Committee that swimmer Miguel Molina be made to carry the Philippine flag in Beijing. Its suggestion was accepted.

Molina and the swimming family are proud of Miguels initial selection as flag-bearer. Its a compliment to Miguel that the person [Pacquiao] selected to replace him is someone as patriotic as Miguel because both of them are high-performance athletes that inspire Filipinos all over the world, Joseph said in a text message to The Manila Times.

Molina, educated in the United States and who trains there, was selected partly in recognition of his winning four gold medals in the 2007 Southeast Asian Games in Thailand. His feat earned him the Games Most Valuable Player award.

He and four other Filipino swimmers have qualified outright for the Beijing Olympics, or without having to book a berth through so-called qualifiers or to be given wild cards.

Joey Romasanta, the spokesman for the Philippine Olympic Committee, told The Times, also in a text message, that Jose Peping Cojuangco Jr., the groups chairman, will hold a meeting on July 9 to discuss Pacquiaos designation as flag-bearer.

Best fighter

The 29-year-old Pacquiao, widely considered as the best pound-for- pound boxer in the world, destroyed David Diaz of the United States in nine rounds to take the World Boxing Council lightweight title in Las Vegas on June 29.

His designation as flag-bearer was announced by President Arroyo during his courtesy call to Malacaang shortly after he arrived in the country.

Upon arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Pacquiao led a motorcade to Quiapo Church in Manila to hear Mass. He was cheered all the way by his legions of fans. Traffic was snarled as the vehicles neared the church around 9:30 a.m.

Snatchers had a field day, robbing television cameramen covering the event of their mobile phones.

Pacman gives back

During a press conference later on Friday held after another courtesy call to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Pacquiao said he and his wife Jinkee have agreed to donate P3 million from his prize money from the clash with Diaz to victims of Typhoon Frank and another P100,000 for the rehabilitation of coral reefs in the country. Reports said he earned at least $3 million from the Las Vegas fight.

The boxing superstar said that before he went to United States on May 12, he and Interior Undersecretary Lito Ruiz had visited an island popular with divers and saw there apparent destruction of coral reefs.

According to Environment Secretary Lito Atienza, only 5 percent of the coral reefs in the country are in good condition. He had welcomed Pacquiao at Quiapo Church.

During his two previous visits to the Environment department, Pacquiao also announced his support for the conservation of the Philippine Eagle and the Philippine tarsier. He also donated P100,000 each for the protection of the two endangered species.

Pacquiao has formed Inaiyahan, a task force that will help the government monitor and prosecute violators of environmental laws.

During the press conference, he also told reporters about his battle against illegal loggers in General Santos City in South Cotabato, his home province. Pacquiao said he and other campaigners had seized hot logs and turned over illegal loggers to the regional office of the Environment department. -- Angelo S. Taekwondo jins ripe for Olympic medal
philstar.com

Philippine Olympic Committee chairman Robert Aventajado sees a medal – of any color – for taekwondo in the coming Beijing Olympics.

“After seeing them in Korea, I think we have a real good chance of winning a medal,” said Aventajado of taekwondo jins Tshomlee Go and Mary Antoinette Rivero who are training in Korea.

It will be the second stint in the Olympics for Go and Rivero who fought in Athens four years ago, but failed to land a medal. A lot has changed since then, and now they look ready to make it.

While Aventajado, president of the Philippine Taekwondo Association, sees a medal for either or both athletes, what color he isn’t sure.

“I don’t know what color,” he said.

Aventajado said he can’t speak for the other sports where the Philippines will be represented in the Beijing Games which fire off on Aug. 8.

“I can’t say anything about the other sports because I’m focused in taekwondo,” he said, referring to the other disciplines like boxing, archery, swimming, diving, shooting and track and field.

But boxing, he went on to say, is capable of landing a medal, too.

“Traditionally, you cannot discount boxing because it has delivered the medals in the past,” said Aventajado of the country’s lone entry, light-fly Harry Tañamor.

“It’s hard to predict for the others. But anything can happen there,” he said.

Go and Rivero have been in Korea for more than two months now, and have undergone rigid training under the masters of the sport.

“Unorthodox,” was how Aventajado described the training that involves sessions in the morning, afternoon and evening.

Rivero, who was barely 16 when she competed in the Athens Olympics, was even made to spar against male taekwondo jins, and showed so much determination.

In one of the sessions, Rivero was even hit on the groin, but she just shook off the pain and went on with the sparring.

The two Pinoy jins worked under four Korean coaches, who felt that their students from a rival country in the sport have what it takes to land a medal in Beijing.

A medal of any color, Aventajado would welcome. – Abac Cordero

RP sending most expensive team to Beijing Olympics
philstar.com

With a P50 million war chest, the bulk of which was used in foreign exposure and training, the Philippine Sports Commission is hopeful of a successful campaign by the 15-athlete Filipino contingent in the Beijing Olympics next month.

“This is the most expensive training that we have,” said Philippine Sports Commission chair William “Butch” Ramirez, adding they have put premium on the athletes’ foreign exposures and training in their buildup for the Games where the country’s is eyeing to finally bag the elusive gold medal.

“We have to put premium on foreign training, it’s the same strategy of other countries that have succeeded in the Olympics,” said Ramirez.

The sports agency has spent P30 million for foreign exposure with tankers Miguel Molina, Ryan Arabejo, Daniel Coakley, JB Walsh and Chrsitel Simms receiving the big slice of the amount while training in the US.

Another P20 million will be used on the actual participation and contingency fund of the RP delegation in the Beijing Games set Aug. 8-24.

The PSC also shouldered the participation of the RP athletes in qualifying tournaments in at least 12 sports.

Boxer Harry Tañamor has trained and competed in Cuba, Chinese Taipei and some Eastern European countries to hone up for Beijing while taekwondo jins Toni Rivero and Tshomlee Go have been undergoing rigid training in South Korea.

Archer Mark Javier had stints in Egypt and France, shooter Eric Ang trained in Germany and Belgium while divers Sheila Mae Perez and Rexel Ryan Fabriga have been going in and out of China.

Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz is now in Guangzhou, China while long jumpers Marestella Torres and Henry Dagmil honed their talent and skills in the US.

“This is a good start, we should maintain this practice of sending out athletes who have good winning chances to train abroad,” said Ramirez. – Joey Villar

Uichico bats for Guiao as RP 5 coach
philstar.com

Jong Uichico has joined the fast-growing list of the “Yeng Guiao believers” but the Ginebra mentor hopes to do better than his Red Bull counterpart in their battle in the Smart PBA Fiesta Cup Final Four beginning Sunday at the Astrodome.

Uichico, who handled the RP team in the 2002 Busan Asiad, pitched for Guiao to be named coach of the national team to the world championship qualifier in China next year.

“I’m personally endorsing Yeng. His style of coaching may not be the norm but it’s effective. Whether you like it or nor, he’s been doing a great job and produces results,” said Uichico.

“The bottom line is we need results and we should go by results,” Uichico added.

The overwhelming majority of PBA officials are also for Guiao, the most consistent top performing coach in the pro league today.

“He’s been doing a good job. Hopefully, he doesn’t against me and my team,” said Uichico of his forthcoming semis duel with Guiao. – Nelson Beltran

Guiao open to coach RP five
By Joaquin Henson
philstar.com

Red Bull coach Yeng Guiao said the other day he will seriously consider accepting the job of calling the shots for the Philippine national team, if offered, but declined to go through a selection process which could be counterproductive.

SBP executive director Noli Eala confirmed recently the PBA’s role in forming the national squad for the FIBA-Asia Championships in China next year and if it qualifies, the World Championships in Turkey in 2010.

Eala said the national coach for the PBA selection will be picked by the pro league. Guiao has been widely recommended by other PBA coaches, particularly Barangay Ginebra’s Joseph Uichico, for the position.

The foreign coach, whom the SBP is recruiting for the developmental pool, will not be tapped for the PBA selection.

Last year, Guiao underwent a tedious grilling process with Chot Reyes and Joel Banal in vying for the job of coaching the national team at the FIBA-Asia Championships in Tokushima. The candidates submitted written explanations of their vision for the squad and were subjected to rounds of interviews. In the end, Reyes was chosen.

“Nobody is talking to me about coaching the national team,” said Guiao, who has bagged five PBA titles, two with Swift and three with Red Bull. “All I know is what I read in the papers. Of course, it would be an honor to coach the Philippine team. Who wouldn’t want it? I’m just happy reading in the papers that some of my peers in the PBA think I would be a good choice.”

Guiao, 49, said he’s not holding his breath to be assigned.

“If it’s offered, I would consider it seriously,” said Guiao. “I’ve never experienced being the head coach of our national team. In 1989, I was an assistant coach in Derick Pumaren’s staff for the Southeast Asian Games and ABC (now FIBA-Asia) Championships. I realize choosing the national coach isn’t easy. Whoever is the team sponsor has a big say in the selection. You might get a consensus but that’s not necessarily the decision.”

Guiao said he’ll decline the nomination if made to undergo another grilling process.

“I’ve been through that before,” he said. “Surely, my record speaks for itself.”

Guiao begged off from naming shoo-ins for the national team.

“I think it would presumptuous on my part to even suggest names,” he said. “We’ve got more than enough talent in the PBA to choose from. The team will be composed of players whom I believe are fit for a system that can succeed in international competition.”

Guiao said how Red Bull has consistently overachieved in the PBA is a tribute to the players, not him.

“Maybe, part of the reason is my ability to communicate,” he continued. “That’s where my background as a politician helps. I try to push the right buttons. But it’s the players who make things happen. My role is to convince the players that my priority is to improve their careers. Loyalty begets loyalty. If you put your career on the line for someone, he’ll do the same for you. Ipaglalaban ka kung ipaglalaban mo siya.”

Guiao said he never takes attention away from the players.

“I don’t take credit for the team’s success,” said Guiao. “Even when I get angry, the players know it’s for their own good. No matter how hard I am on them, we keep our respect for each other. I don’t enjoy getting angry. If I lose my temper, it’s for a reason, for them to get better. They don’t take it against me. They know what my intentions are. And after I get angry, it’s over. Off the court, we’re friends again.”

Guiao said in the coming PBA draft, he’ll be looking out for a big man, a four or five who plays inside. The problem is there may be none available.

“We’ve got big men who play outside like Mick (Pennisi) and Mike (Hrabak),” he went on. “When it’s our turn to draft, I guess we’ll get the best available. I’ve seen Jared Dillinger play and he seems to be okay. We know Gabe Norwood’s game and he’s good, too.”

Guiao said several contracts are up for renewal.

Olympics: RP flag raised this afternoon
Philstar.com

BEIJING – The Philippines officially joins the “Olympic Family” this afternoon when it holds a simple, brief flag-raising ceremony inside the vast Olympic Village, home to the athletes competing in the 29th Summer Games.

The RP tri-color will be raised as the national anthem is played, with a handful of Filipino officials and athletes in attendance in the 1 p.m. rites to be presided by Village Mayor and Communist Party official Chen Zhili.

Philippine Olympic Committee treasurer Julian Camacho, administrative official Moying Martelino, administrative assistant Eleonor dela Peña, archer Mark Javier, shooter Eric Ang, coaches Jennifer Chan and James Chua, wushu bets Willy Wang, Benjie Rivera, Mary Jane Estima and Marian Mariano make up the small RP group joining the flag-raising expected to last no more than 30 minutes.

“Ít will be a short ceremony. The Philippines is one of several countries holding their respective flag-raising rites tomorrow (today),” said Camacho, who along with Martelino and Dela Peña, attended the delegations’ meeting a few days ago.

After the flag is raised, Chen, a senior official of the Communist Party, will say a few words, shake hands with the Filipino athletes and officials, then present a special gift to Team Philippines as tradition dictates.

Camacho said Team RP will also present a special souvenir to the Village Mayor.

The Olympiad comes off the wraps in glittering, lavish rites at 8 p.m. this Friday, with 10,708 athletes from a record 205 nations, including 639 from the host nation, competing in 302 events spread over 28 sports.

According to Martelino, the assigned units for Team RP in the Village is now ready for occupancy by the main group, which is checking in tomorrow afternoon after a four-hour flight via Philippine AirLines from Manila.

Chief of mission Monico Puentevella and Olympic attaché Arturo Macapagal of the shooting association, boxer Harry Tañamor, and swimmer Miguel Molina head this bunch leaving two days ahead of another group that includes President Arroyo, First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, boxing champion Manny Pacquiao and Philippine Sports Commission chairman William Ramirez.

Ang, Javier and their coaches checked in last Thursday, joining Camacho, Martelino and Dela Peña in the Village, a 66-hectare complex of high-rise apartments that has practically everything.

The Village boasts of a library, clinic, swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball courts, jogging tracks, shopping areas, coffee shops, fire station and restaurants.

Having balconies overlooking walkway and courtyards, the apartments, modestly-decorated in marble and wood, will be refitted for sale after the Olympics and Paralympics.

Others leaving tomorrow are Maristella Torres and Henry Dagmil of athletics, Sheila Mae Perez and Ryan Rexel Fabriga of diving, Daniel Coakley, Ryan Arabejo, James Walsh and Joan Christel Simms of swimming, Hidilyn Diaz of weighlifting, coaches Patricio Gaspi, Joseph Sy, Zhang Dehu, Jason Calanog, Carlos Brosas, Ramon Solis, officials Ricardo Yang, Mark Joseph and doctors Martin Camara, Alejandro Pineda and Orson Odulio.

Wang, a former world and Asian champion, Estima, Mariano and Rivera are here as the country’s entries in wushu which will be staged in the Games as a special event for the first time.

Medals won in wushu will not be included in the official medal tally of the Olympics.
