Crucial games for SBC, JRU
manila bulletin
Defending champion San Beda College and Jose Rizal University try to boost their twice-to-beat bids when they go up against separate rivals today in the NCAA basketball tournament at the Astrodome.
The Red Lions clash with the College of St. Benilde Blazers at 4 p.m., while the Heavy Bombers collide with the San Sebastian College Stags at 2 O’Clock.
A victory for both San Beda and JRU, which tote similar 8-3 records along with idle Letran at the top of the standings, will formally give them Final 4 berths while moving a step nearer the coveted twice-to-beat incentive for the top two squads after the eliminations.
San Beda’s 74-51 win over the Blazers in the first round was forfeited after Sam Ekwe wore a different uniform during their game.
Though the Red Lions lost two more games against JRU and Mapua, coach Frankie Lim said his boys have already learned from their past mistakes.
He expects his boys to play with lots of fire and passion this time as they are eager to get back at the Blazers.
"It requires a lot of energy and defense. It’s not easy. It’s hard to be No. 1. It’s harder to stay No. 1," Lim said. "The expectations are higher. We are just trying to push ourselves to reach that certain level."
Both San Beda and St. Benilde are coming off big victories. The Red Lions edged JRU, 71-59, last Monday, while the Blazers stunned Mapua, 66-56, a week ago.
Though the Blazers are already out of the running in the Final Four, the Taft-based dribblers are eager to end their campaign on a high note, and beating the Red Lions on the court is foremost on their minds.
"We do not want to pressure ourselves. As long as we improve in every game," Blazers mentor Gee Abanilla said.
The Stags are the hottest team so far by winning their last six games that improved their record to 7-4.
Aside from their win-run, the Stags enjoy a big psychological advantage going into today’s crucial game owing to their 57-54 win over the Heavy Bombers in the first round.
Another thing going for the Stags is that the Heavy Bombers are still smarting from a 71-59 defeat from the Red Lions.
"The Stags are a solid team and the only unbeaten team in the second round. Hopefully, they are due for one (loss)," JRU coach Ariel Vanguardia said. "We also lost to a hungrier San Beda in the last game."
The showdown between JRU’s James Sena and San Sebastian’s Jason Ballesteros at the paint is expected to provide extra color to the game.
The 6-foot-6 Sena is averaging 15 points and six rebounds a game while Ballesteros norms 9.9 points, 13 boards and three block shots.
Providing reinforcements for the Heavy Bombers are Marc Cagoco, John Wilson, Jay-R Bulangis and Reycon Cabigting, while the Stags will lean on Jim Viray, Raymond Maconocido and John Raymundo.
