MANILA, Philippines – The Mapua Cardinals only scored two points in the fourth quarter but still managed to come out victorious.
Thanks to a 31-point third quarter explosion, the Cardinals coasted to a 69-52 win over former leader Letran Knights in Friday’s National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament at the Astrodome in Pasay City.
Enjoying a 36-23 halftime lead, the Cardinals torched the third quarter behind the combined efforts of playmaker Jonathan Banal and swingman Ian Mazo as Mapua outscored its next-door neighbors, 31-15.
The Cardinals ended that 31-point explosion with a closing 10-0 run to enjoy their biggest lead at 67-38 entering the final 10 minutes of the game. Banal's three-pointer at the buzzer gave Mapua a 29-point cushion heading into the fourth period.
But Mapua went cold in the final canto allowing Rey Guevarra and Letran to cut the lead to 20 points, 67-47, with still plenty of time on the clock (5:28).
Mapua also helped Letran’s cause going scoreless for more than five minutes.
Luck and time, however, was not on the Knights’ side missing three straight baskets and committing a turnover that could have helped trim further the Cardinals’ lead.
The Cardinals almost failed to score in the game with Mazo breaking Mapua’s nine-minute scoring drought when he sank two free throws 57 seconds left in the game clock and the final tally the only thing to be settled.
Mapua’s win had Final Four implications as they stayed in the hunt for a semis spot. The Cardinals now hold a 7-5 card just half-a-game behind the 8-4 slates of their victims, Jose Rizal University and San Sebastian.
Mapua needs to win its last two games against Perpetual Help on September 3 and JRU on September 5 then hope that no one among the Knights, Stags and the Heavy Bombers earn their ninth wins to force a playoff for the fourth semis berth.
Defending champion San Beda was all smiles after Letran’s loss as the Red Lions earned sole possession of the top spot with a 9-3 mark.
Ian Mazo paced the Cardinals with 20 points behind a four-of-eight shooting from beyond the arc. He also had six rebounds, four assists and two steals. – GMANews.TV
