Jose Rizal routs PCU, secures playoff for NCAA semis berth

MANILA, Philippines – Jose Rizal University rode the hot hands of John Wilson and the Heavy Bombers defeated the Philippine Christian University Dolphins 74-59 in the men’s basketball tournament of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Monday at the Astrodome in Pasay City.
The Bombers tied San Sebastian for second place in the standings with identical 9-4 records, assuring them of at least a playoff for a semifinal berth.
Wilson was six-of-nine from three-point territory and finished with 20 points, while big man JR Sena chipped in 14.
“I have to be honest. We felt the pressure of being on top of the standings, so I challenged my boys to step up at nagawa nila," said Heavy Bombers mentor Ariel Vanguardia. “Pero hindi pa tapos ang laban."
Only two games separate the five teams contending for playoff berths. San Beda (9-3), Letran (8-4) and Mapua (7-5) are included in that bunch.
PCU (3-10) is out of contention.
JRU’s next game is on Friday against Mapua.
In the other seniors' game Monday, Perpetual Help (2-11) beat College of Saint Benilde (4-10) 75-65 in a no-bearing game. It was the Altas’ first win after dropping 11 consecutive.

NCAA Rocky Road to the Playoffs

With the JRU Heavy Bombers winning its PCU assignment, the September 3, 2008 billing will probably be the 38th parallel that will separate some and will leave some room for the rest of the pack to make way to their seats towards the Final 4.
If San Beda and Mapua win their respective bouts on September 3, that would mean the Red Lions in solo 1st place thus gaining twice to beat advantage while the Cardinals will live and fight another day.
If San Sebastian wins, and Perpetual Help would like to play spoiler with PCU being the other, the Golden Stags will claim the top spot, San Beda will place 2nd and the Cardinals will make its final stand on September 5 against the Heavy Bombers for at least a playoff for the 4th spot and hope that either JRU or Letran would slip and forget that they still have some remaining games to play.
On September 5, if the Heavy Bombers and Letran come to play and win, the Heavy Bombers will be in 2nd place if San Sebastian loses to San Beda on September 3. In that case, if Letran wins, the Knights and the Golden Stags will be tied at 9-4.
If San Beda loses its encounter with San Sebastian while Mapua and PCU suddenly played like they have nothing to lose but their wallets, suddenly you have a tie for 1st (San Beda) and 2nd (San Sebatian) place and 3rd (JRU) and 4th (Mapua) place at 9-4 and 9-5 with Letran walking on a tight rope at 5th.
On the final day of eliminations, if JRU, currently at 9-4, prevail over Mapua in their September 5 match, Letran hurdles its PCU undertaking, JRU will be at 10-4 and Letran will be at 9-5 which means the final slot of the semis and bye-bye to the Cardinals.
San Beda will be untouchable at 1st place if it sweeps its remaining games. If the Red Lions split their remaining elimination matches, that would mean a dispute for the top spot and positioning for whoever would take on the No. 3 and No. 4 seed in the semis. If the Red Lions should lose both games, they might drop to 4th place depending on how the other contenders perform.
So there you have it, it’s not yet over for all of them. Until they hit the right number, anything can still happen. A possibility of endless playoff litany looming in the oldest collegiate basketball league in the country. This might mean that UAAP will finish ahead of the NCAA even if it opened a week early. MANILA, Philippines – The Mapua Cardinals remained in contention for a Final Four berth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament after a 75-51 dumping of the Perpetual Help Altas in Wednesday’s game at the Astrodome in Pasay City.
The win improved the Cardinals’ record to 8-5 and brought a number of possible scenarios as the tournament enters the semifinal phase.
Mapua is just a half game behind the no. 4 spot currently occupied by the Letran Knights (8-4), the losing finalist last year.
But in order for the Cardinals to make it into the semis, they need to beat the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers on Friday and hope that the Knights lose either to the Philippine Christian University Dolphins or the San Beda Red Lions to force a playoff for the last Final Four berth.
The Cardinals can also get an automatic semifinal spot if they win against the Bombers and if the Knights lose their last two games against the Dolphins on Friday and the Lions on September 10.
But Letran will complete the Final Four cast if it wins one of its final two matches coupled by a Mapua loss.
In case the Knights beat the Dolphins and the Cardinals upset the Bombers on Friday, Mapua must hope that Letran drops its final game against San Beda next week to remain in contention.
But a loss by Mapua against the Heavy Bombers, which is also aiming to get a shot for the twice-to-beat edge that goes for finishing in the top two, and a Letran win would end the Cardinals’ chances.
Reigning NCAA most valuable player Kevin Dela Peña, who was the 15th overall pick by the Alaska Aces in Sunday’s PBA rookie draft, led the Cardinals with 12 points, including seven rebounds and seven assists.
