actually, mas safer ang diving than swimming... kse you have the oxygen tank with you and a lot of gadgets to help you monitor your density & breathing.... just make sure all of it are working!

Join an organized group dive by Diving enthusiasts in your province... it's a lot cheaper.

Hindi po Oxygen and laman ng SCUBA tank kundi ordinary Compressed air lang po ang ginagamit sa SCUBA diving...

hahaha! i did not realy want to correct this but it seems may nakapuna pala. that is correct, compressed air lang talaga ang nasa tank because your body can't breathe in pure oxygen when you're down deep at very high pressure.

also you don't have to concern yourself with your density (you're density is pretty much constant whether your underwater or not).... i think what red mohican means is that it's your tank pressure you need to monitor as well as your depth and the amount of time you have spent under water.

i haven't tried nitrox diving.... would try it out some day though.

Salamat sa Corrections Sadik Jun & spongkilicious! ... leisure diving pa lang kse na try ko with diving instructors to help out.

hope you can post more tips & fun pics so we can learn more from you experts.

You don't really need to buy all your equipment in one sitting. that can be a bit expensive.

try the intro dive first. i think that costs around 1K for one dive inclusive of all the equipment and the dive master. basically what he or she'll do is to teach you the basics (proper breathing underwater, etc.) and then tour you underwater but usually you won't be given fins so that you'll be holding onto him/her the whole time.

kapag nagustuhan mo, then you need to take the open water certification course. this would cost you around 12 to 15K inclusive of books and certificates and c-card. kasama na din dito ang pool sessions and equipment, exams... hindi kasama dito yung check-out dive fees (resort and equipment rentals). what you need to buy during this course is the mask, snorkel, booties and fins. You can get the set for maybe 3K or as high as 14K depende sa brand. IST i think is cheap while Mares and Tusa are quite expensive. But just a tip, I still have a 14 year old Mares Fins that I still use today. Yung mask important kasi over time, it takes the shape if your face kaya hindi adviseable na manghihiram ka lang. For your open water course, kailangan mo ng mga 25K all in all.

When you buy your gear, the next step would be to buy your wet suit (lalo na kung ginawin ka), Buoyancy Control Device, Ist and 2nd Stage regulators and guages. That is all that you basically need. The tanks as well as the weight and weight belts i suggest you just rent.

The wet suit can cost you around 3.5K (Pinnacle) to maybe 7.5K (Mares)

More often than not, may mga dive shops sa atin that sells these as a bundle (BCD, Regulator and Guages) from 35K a set to maybe 75K. The regulators (1st and 2nd stage) can cost you around 16K to 35K, the BCD from 16K up, and the guages from 5K up depende kung gusto mo ng dive computer.

Mukhang magastos but when you really take care of your gear, you'll be able to use them for a really really long time.

If you're on a budget, you can buy the all these (except for the Mask and wet suit) second hand. Ok lang naman kung second hand as long as taken cared of yung mga gamit.

Diving is a great sport and we're quite lucky na ang pilipinas eh madaming dive spots so I do suggest you try it out.

Hope this helps.
