JAWO & CO. MEET ANEW, DISCUSS GUIAO’S CHOICES
...

For the second time since its creation, the RP-PBA advisory group led by former senator Robert S. Jaworksi met Tuesday evening at Shangri-La Plaza, discussed the 14-man Philippine team lineup drawn up by national coach Yeng Guiao, and came up with suggestions for possible consideration.

Everything discussed during the closed-door meeting attended by former national coaches Norman Black, Tim Cone, Jong Uichico and Jaworski will be emailed to Guiao, who left for the States on a business trip early Tuesday, for study.

PBA commissioner Renauld 'Sonny' Barrios, who brought together the council of coaches of previous PBA-backed national teams on Guiao's request upon his selection a couple of months ago, will be getting in touch with Guiao today.

Chot Reyes, who handled the RP squad during the 2007 FIBA-Asia Olympic qualifier in Tokushima, was absent due to an earlier engagement but shared valuable insights with Guiao when the group first met last month.

All four coaches begged off from disclosing details of their discussion.

"We're just here on an advisory capacity," said Cone, coach of the 1998 RP team in the Bangkok Asian Games. "All our suggestions will be forwarded to coach Yeng. Whatever he decides on, we will be there to support."

"It was a fruitful meeting," said Black, who handled the nationals in the 1994 Hiroshima Asiad. "We were able to exchange ideas, and these will be delivered to coach Yeng."

Both Jaworski, the 1990 RP-Beijing Asian Games team mentor, and Uichico, who coached the 2002 RP-Busan squad, both stressed the importance of outside shooting and general attitude but stopped short of going into particulars.

"We'll see how coach Yeng responds," said Barrios, who has scheduled a luncheon meeting between the league governors and Guiao on Nov. 13.

"I'd like to think that he'll be responding to the suggestions before he returns early next week."

Guiao is supposed to officially name the team on Nov. 14, but he may be forced to delay the announcement a few more days in light of the advisory group's proposals.

"The advisory group has left itself available to coach Yeng before he names the team," Barrios said. "The set date is tentative, if he says he's prepared to postpone naming the team."

Barrios wouldn't comment on the possibility of other PBA players getting added to the 14-man roster or of new names actually replacing those already in it.

"It will all be up to coach Yeng," he said.

Aguilar invited to try out for RP 5

SIX-FOOT-NINE Japeth Aguilar, son of former Ginebra stalwart Peter Aguilar, was invited to try out for the national team.

“I talked to Peter Aguilar when I attended personal matters in the United States and he told me his son is coming over in May next year,” said national coach Yeng Guiao. “The 14-member team can expand to one or two more slots and Japeth might be given a slot in the team.”

Still, Guiao is not making any promises that the former Ateneo Eagle and now Western Kentucky standout can make it to the team.

“We haven’t seen him play yet. He got injured last year, but I’m sure, he has a lot of potential,” said Guiao.

Aguilar is the first homegrown Filipino to play in the US National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I for the past 50 years, but his dream of flourishing in America was cut short by a foot injury.

Late last year, he started feeling pain in his right foot. Doctors discovered a stress fracture, and he was sidelined for two months.

“When he was injured, he lost his spot in the rotation,” said the elder Aguilar in one of his interviews. “I don’t understand why coach Darrin Horn didn’t put him back in the lineup.”

But Aguilar will play for the Hilltoppers for another year.

“When they found out Japeth was injured, they appealed to him to use another year of his eligibility, so he’ll play until 2010,” the elder Aguilar confirmed. Rey Joble

SBP willing to build dome for Fiba Asia

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is dead serious in its bid to host the 2011 FIBA Asia Men’s Championship and is in fact willing to build a new coliseum to hold the games.

Manny V. Pangilinan, SBP president and chairman of PLDT-Smart, said they have manifested their bid to host the event to the International Basketball Federation or FIBA twice.

The SBP presented its bid during a meeting with FIBA president Bob Elphinston and secretary-general Patrick Baumann in Geneva last week.

And to help them in their bid, the SBP, this early, is planning to build a brand new coliseum.

“We need a national basketball center for training and staging of international competitions. We need a new venue for this kinds of competitions,” said Pangilinan.

The SBP board held a three-hour meeting yesterday at the PLDT office in Makati.

He said while there’s the Araneta Coliseum, the SBP really doesn’t have full control of it because the venue that can house a little over 20,000 fans is also being used for different events.

“Now we have to start planning because we only have two to three years before the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship. We’re already looking at alternative sites,” he said.

Pangilinan said Quezon City under Mayor Sonny Belmonte has already mentioned the availability of a site somewhere in North Triangle or near the Trinoma Mall.

“It has to be somewhere accessible to the public. Nothing is fixed yet as to the venue. It needs the cooperation of the national government,” he added.

The project, a very expensive one, will need the cooperation of the Philippine Basketball Association which has long been planning and dreaming of having its own venue, too.

“We will coordinate with the PBA,” said Pangilinan, adding that everything would be expedited once the Philippines is awarded the right to host the event.

Asked how much it would need to build the new venue, Pangilinan answered, “A lot.”

Ricky Vargas, vice president for PLDT and former PBA chairman, said “just to build the coliseum already means a lot of money, and hosting the event will be another one.”

“But I’ve been dreaming about this since I became PBA chairman. Now it might happen,” he said.

^^ If mabigay sa atin ang task na mag host ng FIBA-Asia I think magandang step ito. Home crowd can really boost the Pinoy's chances. Sana nga, sana lang talaga magkatotoo.

RP 5 sets bonding session
spacer
By WAYLON GALVEZ

Before plunging into training session, coach Yeng Guiao will have a get-to-know-each-other session with the 14 candidates of the all-pro Philippine team today.

The bonding session, organized by PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios, is set at 7 p.m. at the Kamayan Restaurant in EDSA.

The players named by Guiao are Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine, Jared Dillinger of Talk ’N Text, Jayjay Helterbrand of Barangay Ginebra, Cyrus Baguio of Red Bull, Mick Pennisi of San Miguel Beer, Asi Taulava of Coca-Cola, James Yap and Kerby Raymundo of Purefoods, Kelly Williams and Ryan Reyes of Sta. Lucia Realty, Ranidel de Ocampo and Arwind Santos of Air21, Willie Miller and Sonny Thoss of Alaska.

Guiao said the affair aims to create a bonding among the 14 players along with his coaching staff that includes his Red Bull assistants Gee Abanilla and Roel Nadurata.

Aside from that, Guiao hopes to orient the aspirants of his "philosophy" and the "objectives" of the national team.

The RP squad is determined to earn a World Championship berth when it competes in next year’s qualifying tournament FIBA-Asia Championship from Aug. 21 30 in China.

The last time a Philippine Team played in the world tourney was in 1978 when Manila hosted the event and the Filipinos placed eight in 12 nations.

It was in 1954 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil when the Filipinos bagged the bronze medal as the team mentored by Herminio Silva and powered by Caloy Loyzaga and the late Lauro Mumar defeated France (66-60).

Guiao will conduct his first practice session on Nov. 24 at The Arena in San Juan.

The all-PBA RP Team will also see action in the FIBA-Asia qualifier, the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Championship in May 2009.

MVP hopes to get top college players for RP team
11/18/2008 | 07:49 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Basketball Association of the Philippines-Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan hopes to form the Philippine national team with the country’s top college players.

Pangilinan, a prominent sports patron and chairman of Smart and PLDT, said they will give the team enough financial assistance so they would commit to BAP-SBP’s four-year program.

“We also have to support them financially and we will try to match the salary a PBA player gets to these players so they won’t move up to the pro league for the next four years," said Pangilinan, who is a known sports patron.

Smart and Harbour Centre will be tasked to help finance the team to train under Serbian coach Rajko Toroman.

Part of the team’s training is a PBA stint as they prepare for the 2011 Fiba-Asia Olympic qualifying tournament, which the Philippines would like to host.

Harbour Centre owner Mikee Romero supported the men’s basketball team that won the gold in the 2007 Southeast Asian Games. Romero met with Pangilinan on Monday to formalize their partnership in leading the country’s drive for a seat to the 2012 London Olympics.

Pangilinan is courting Fiba to let the Philippines host the 2011 Fiba-Asia tournament. China, which was earlier said to be interested to host the Olympic qualifier, is out from the list since they will host next years Asian Championship with the PBA supported national team of coach Yeng Guiao to represent the country.

In line with the project, the BAP-SBP also plans to construct a new venue with PBA’s help. The new coliseum, which hopes to be finished in two years, will also be the site of the National Basketball Training Center that will help train future national team members. – GMANews.TV

RP wants 2011 FIBA-Asia meet here
By: Gerry Ramos

COSTLY as it may, but the Philippines has firmed up its bid to host the FIBA-Asia men’s basketball qualifying tournament for the 2012 London Olympics.

The country’s intention to stage the tournament two years from now was among the several issues discussed by officials of the BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas in their recent meeting with International Basketball Federation (FIBA) executives Bob Elphiston (president) and Patrick Baumann (secretary-general).

“We have several discussions when we met with FIBA officials last Monday, and among those tackled was that we might host one of the major tournaments leading to the London Olympics,” announced SBP executive director Noli Eala of the Olympic qualifying meet set in 2011.

“We have manifested our intention to host it not just once but twice,” he added.

Eala made the pronouncement in a press conference that preceded the BAP-SBP Board meeting at the Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) company office in Makati. With him in the presidential table are association president Manny V. Pangilinan, chairman Oscar Moreno and vice-chairman Ricky Vargas.

Pangilinan said building a new basketball venue would enhance the country’s chance of hosting the meet last held here in 1973 when it was still known as the Asian Basketball Championship (ABC).

“We have to built a new basketball venue for that kind of competition,” Pangilinan noted, stressing the need to have new playing arenas around other than the Araneta Coliseum of which the SBP `had really no control.’

PBA likely to frown on naturalization
http://www.philstar.com

If the PBA allowed each team to recruit a naturalized player, it would be easier to select a foreign cager for the national squad but the pro league may not likely subscribe to the concept mentioned by SBP executive director Noli Eala.

More wishful thinking than pushing the idea, Eala said recently choosing a foreign reinforcement for the national team would be facilitated if the PBA opened its doors to naturalized players.

“If the PBA allowed each franchise a naturalized player, there would be a pool of 10 foreigners to choose from for the national team,” said Eala.

A PBA source, however, said while the concept is exciting, it will be costly and the public may not accept the idea of players applying for wholesale naturalization.

The PBA could also be a perfect training ground for stratospheric foreign players applying for naturalization except that in the coming Fiesta Conference, the limit for imports is 6-6. Last season, there was no height limit for imports.

Even as more and more foreign players are expressing interest to naturalize, Eala said it will take at least a year before the process of adopting a new citizenship is completed under Philippine laws.

Eala said if a foreign player is chosen early next year, the procedure for naturalization will allow him to suit up for the national team only in time for the Asian Games in 2010.

NBA veteran Keith Closs, 32, heads the list of foreigners inquiring about naturalization to gain eligibility for the Philippine team. The 7-3 center’s agent is Jerome Henderson, a former PBA import with Tanduay. Also expressing interest were 7-0 Deng D’Awol of Nigeria and 6-9 Gentry Lewis of Delta State.

The latest to send an inquiry was 6-11 Terrence Gamble of Tarleton State. In 2006, Gamble led the varsity Texans to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II tournament. He is now playing as an import in the Mexican league.

Eala said age is a critical factor in deciding which foreign player to tap. Gamble, 25, has the edge in this department because if ever the national team qualifies for the 2012 London Olympics, he’ll only be 29.

“We are not looking to short-cut the process,” said Eala. “We’ll abide by whatever is the law. Our lawyers are now looking into the steps to take. We estimate at least a year before a player is naturalized through the legislative process.”

During President Marcos’ administration, naturalization by executive decree was practiced. Two naturalized players Dennis Still and Jeff Moore suited up for the Philippine team that won the Asian Basketball Confederation (now FIBA-Asia) title in 1985. A third player Chip Engelland would’ve been eligible for the national squad in 1987 in line with the FIBA rule of three-year residency.

Naturalization by presidential decree was the same process that allowed American J. R. Holden to play for Russia in the last European Championships and Olympics. Russian president Vladimir Putin himself signed Holden’s naturalization papers.

Today, FIBA grants immediate eligibility to naturalized players but restricts a national team to only one foreigner unlike in 1985 when the limit was two.

PBA national coach Yeng Guiao said he is open to recruiting a naturalized player and even suggested bringing in two in case one gets injured. But the process of naturalization will not allow Guiao to use a foreign player for the SEABA Championships next May and the FIBA-Asia Championships in Yangzhou, China, next August.

Eala said the top two finishers of the SEABA Championships will represent the Southeast Asia sub-zone in the FIBA-Asia Championships.

Eala said Serbian coach Rajko Toroman’s developmental national team will represent the country at the Southeast Asian Games in Laos next year. The team is distinct from Guiao’s PBA selection that will play in the SEABA and FIBA-Asia Championships.

CA affirms Pangilinan group in BAP-SBP row
11/20/2008 | 08:23 PM

MANILA, Philippines – The drive towards a seat in the 2012 Olympics goes into full swing after the Court of Appeals threw out the earlier ruling made by the Manila Regional Trial Court recognizing the leadership of the Prospero Pichay faction of the Basketball Association of the Philippines-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP).

In the decision penned by CA Associate Justice Josefina Guevara-Salonga, she recognized the legality of the elections made by the Pangilinan wing and thereby declare the group as the legitimate one to handle basketball in the country.

“The national congress convened by the respondents is hereby declared null and voided. Consequently, the election of officers at said meeting is similarly declared to be without force and effect," said Guevara-Salonga in her decision.

“Respondents are further directed to cease and desist from further acting as officers of the SBP and turnover the affairs of the organization to the petitioners," she said in the ruling.

The status quo issued after Pangilinan went to the CA was also lifted.

“The foregoing considered, the instant petition is hereby granted and the assailed decision reversed and set aside. Accordingly, the petition for declaration of nullity of elections field with the court a quo is hereby dismissed," added the Guevara-Salonga.

Pangilinan welcomed the decision even as he admitted to have felt like giving up during the early stages of the court case.

“Since the beginning, we have nothing but difficulty. There were moments when we wanted to give up and compromise. Who in the world after all, wanted to be brought to court," said Pangilinan.

But the welfare of the basketball loving Filipinos kept their fighting spirit alive. “But we stuck to what is right for the association. We just have to show the Filipino people that we can do well by dong the right things," added Pangilina.

The CA decision was immediately forwarded to Fiba, which is basketball’s world governing body. Fiba has been in good terms with Pangilinan since he assumed the BAP-SBP presidency.

“This court case has hindered our authority," said BAP-SBP vice chairman Ricky Vargas. “We’ll now be able to continue with our job. The money we’re spending to our lawyers will now go in financing our programs."

BAP-SBP secretary-general Graham Lim, meanwhile, said that their group is still studying their option after the CA ruling since they can file a mandatory appeal with the CA or go to the Supreme Court for a final ruling. – GMANews.TV

RP amateur cagers to be paid like pros

Forming a young, talented national team is one thing.

Making the players stay is another.

To make sure they do, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is drawing up a very special compensation package that should keep the players in the team at least for the next four years.

“We have to sell the concept of the national team,” said SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan, adding that players who will be chosen to be part of the team should be compensated well.

“That’s the number one question – compensation,” said the PLDT and Smart chairman who has the responsibility of charting the course of Philippine basketball as SBP head.

Pangilinan said the SBP will try to “match” what the PBA players are getting if it wants to lure the best young talents into the national team that is looking at the 2012 London Olympics.

“What we are tracking is the Olympics. And the future of Philippine basketball is not today’s PBA players but the future PBA players. We want them to play in the national team before they get to the PBA,” said Pangilinan.

“We really need to form a proper team and we have to train them.”

And keep them, too.

Pangilinan said Smart Communications is working out a plan with Harbour Centre, which is owned by Mikee Romero, in drawing up the compensation package to be offered to the players.

Rookies in the PBA are paid as much as P150,000 a month while veteran stars get as much as P350,000 a month.

“There are so many opportunities the SBP can offer to the members of the national team that is being formed,” said SBP executive director Noli Eala without really elaborating.

What’s certain is that the SBP is willing to spend just to make sure that it forms the best non-PBA team possible, even if it means naturalizing one or two players and paying them even more than what PBA players get.

Eala said they’re communicating with 6-foot-10 Terrence Gamble, who’s now playing in Mexico, regarding naturalization. The 26-year-old who once shattered a backboard with a dunk has already shown interest. - Abac Cordero
