The FIBA rankings are based on a four year cycle. That means performance for the past four years are used to rank nations. Part of the four years included non-participation of the Philippines due to the FIBA ban. Malaking effect talaga yung ginawa ng BAP during the past. Ang sama ng record natin.

we need to adopt the euro style masyado kasi tayong nag depend sa US style na hindi naman uubra kasi sa height pa lang e yari na tayo kaya dapat we should develop a more potent passing and shooting game and total team effort yung individual talent andiyan lang yan eh pero kung it will be mixed with proper chemistry and total team effort mas magiging epektib yan. ang basketball ay hindi isang individual game kundi team game kaya it will really require a big team effort

Hiring of an effective foreign coach would lead Team Pilipinas to a top 3 or even top 2 finish in the 2009 FIBA Asia tournament.

It's high time that they should seriously consider this option. No offense to homegrown coaches but none of them so far have been exposed to high-level international basketball for the past decade.

China has a foreign coach. Jordan has a foreign coach. A whole lot of national teams have foreign coaches. The Philippines should also get one in order to train our coaches and players for the long term future.

Agree! Swallow the bitter pill and eat your Filipino pride; we are one of the worst teams in the entire world! It's time to try all ways possible and see how it helps us in the long run.

Its time for us to wake up. Some of us still living in the 80's or 90's where we are one of the best and competitive basketball team in Asia. Sad bad true, we are now one of the worst team even in Asia.

SBP wants to host Olympics qualifying
manila bulletin

MACAU — To boost the country’s chance of returning to the Olympic scene, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is planning to host an Asian Olympic qualifying tournament for the 2012 London Games.

This was learned yesterday from SBP vice chairman Ricky Vargas after local cage officials recently met with top officials of FIBA, or the International Basketball Federation during the Beijing Olympics.

According to Vargas, the SBP group met with FIBA president Bob Elphinston, secretary-general Patrick Baumann and FIBA-Asia counterpart Dato Yeoh Choo-Hock in Beijing in the just-concluded Olympics where they signified their interest to host the 2011 FIBA-Asia Championship.

"We already told FIBA that the Philippines is more than willing to host the FIBA-Asia meet in 2011 which will serve as qualifier to the 2012 Olympics in London," Vargas told sportswriters prior to the PBA Board’s contract signing with new television partner Solar Sports Entertainment Corporation here.

The PBA and Solar Sports formally inked a three-year contract reportedly worth P508 million.

Aside from Vargas, who represents Talk ’N Text, also present were outgoing board chairman Tony Chua of Red Bull, incoming chair Joaqui Trillo, Lito Alvarez of Air21, JB Baylon of Coca-Cola, Ginebra’s Robert Non, Magnolia’s Ely Capacio, Purefoods’ Rene Pardo, Rain or Shine’s Memerto Mondragon and Sta. Lucia’s Atty. Ariel Magno.

Commissioner Sonny Barrios, as well as Solar Sports CEO and chairman William Tieng and COO Peter Chan Leong also attended the contract signing.

The league board will also elect its new vice chairman and treasurer later in the day.

Vargas actually mentioned the latest SBP development to his fellow board members since the pro league is one of the major stakeholders of the amateur association under the leadership of telecommunications mogul Manny V. Pangilinan.

Vargas was with the SBP chairman, Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno and Executive Director Noli Eala when they met with the FIBA officials.

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Jose "Peping" Cojuangco Jr., during that same meeting according to Vargas, reiterated the local Olympic body’s support to Pangilinan’s group.

Vargas said that anytime next week, Eala would personally present the SBP proposal to host the 2011 FIBA-Asia Championship Olympic qualifying tournament to Baumann in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Last year, the all-pro national team backed by San Miguel Corporation (SMC) and mentored by Chot Reyes placed a disappointing ninth overall, thus failing to secure a seat in the Beijing Olympics.

After declaring earlier that the league will no longer represent the country in any international meet, the PBA Board was urged to form a team for the 2009 FIBA-Asia Championship in China, a qualifying event for the 2010 World Championship in Turkey.
