MANILA, Philippines – The RP Nationals bowed out of contention in the Fiba-Asia Youth basketball championships after an 86-78 loss to Japan Monday night in Tehran.
The Filipinos fell to Korea in their first quarterfinal game Sunday and with their second straight loss, the Nationals would be relegated to the consolation phase where they can finish as high as fifth place.
Canada-raised Filipinos Norberto Torres and Matthew Wright scored 24 and 17 points respectively for the RP team which threatened the Japanese through most of the game but couldn’t come closer than three points.
Up 81-78, the Japanese scored a critical field goal and converted crucial free throws in the last 50 seconds to seal RP’s doom. – GMANews.TV
Well good job by our youth team. Our next game will be against Iran which is a no bearing game because Iran is qualified in the semifinals. Beating the home team will be a good send off for Team Pilipinas.

FIBA Asia – Japan take on Kazakhstan; Iran play Syria
TEHRAN (FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Men): None of the four semifinalists of last edition’s championship at Urumqi two years ago will play in the semifinals of the 20th FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Men. That was the script that emerged at the end of the Quarterfinal round on Tuesday.
In the semifinals on Thursday, Japan will take on Kazakhstan and Iran will play Syria in the semifinals. The championship takes a break on Wednesday.
Japan scripted a fantastic resurgence to send last edition’s runners-up Korea packing, with an 81-75 win and book the second berth – behind Iran – from Group II.
The other three semifinalists, ironically, all lost their final Quarterfinal round engagement, with the adverse result having no effect on their progress.
