A REAL NATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

It has always been a puzzle that in a country so enamored with the hoops sport, there is no wide ranging national basketball championship.

Of course there are the NCAA, UAAP, NCRAA, NAASCU, CESAFI, etc., but these just underscore the factionalism and regionalism that are facts of life in our 7-thousand plus islands.

Admittedly, there have been attempts to stage such a national championship, but none have so far been successful in involving the thousands of players, coaches, referees and other officials who are aching to be noticed in the countryside.

Until the recently-launched Philippine Collegiate Champions League which involves 250-count them, 250-different varsity basketball teams from all over the country!

Sanctioned by the BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, the PCCL is by far the most extensive basketball league in the country which aims to discover basketball talents who otherwise would linger and eventually wither in obscurity in some far-flung area due to lack of opportunity and exposure.

PCCL taps Trinidad 'Sweet 16' commish

The Board of Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) has renewed the appointment of PBL chief Chino Trinidad as the commissioner for the FilOil Flying V “Sweet 16” Final Challenge which will determine the national collegiate champion for the year.

The event is presented by SMART, PLDT, FilOil Flying V and KFC.

“The PCCL Board is fully satisfied with the performance of Chino Trinidad’s PBL team during the past three years. We are confident that the group has the experience and technical and operational capability to handle these big games in the championship,” said PCCL chair Rey Gamboa.

Under the arrangement, the PBL group shall be responsible for all technical aspects of the games and will provide the operational and technical support such as game officials, table officials, game/players’ statistics, and other administrative services.

The top collegiate teams competing in the “Sweet 16” Final Challenge are Ateneo Blue Eagles, San Beda Red Lions, De La Salle Green Archers, JRU Heavy Bombers, University of Visayas Green Lancers, San Sebastian-Recoletos de Cavite Baycats, MLQU Stallions, UCN Golden Dragons, Lyceum Phils. Pirates, MIT Cardinals, Letran Knights, FEU Tamaraws, USJR-Cebu Jaguars, USC-Cebu Warriors, Arellano U Chiefs and University of the East Warriors.

PCCL also announced that students and collegiate basketball fans are invited to visit the PCCL official website, www.CollegiateChampionsLeague.net, and register their choices as to which teams will eventually wind up in the Top Four. Those with the most number of correct answers will be given surprise gifts from the sponsors.

haiiiizzz.. last year's PCCL 3rd placer STI Colleges Olympians didn't make it to the sweet sixteen. we'll gonna wait for another year to try again. somehow, i'll bet on UV to be the champion..

Last year i believe Finalist ang UV eh...ang kalaban nila sa Finals was ADMU..and andun lahat ng TEAM A ng Ateneo..nag MVP pa nga si Baclao last season eh..dun ko din unang nakita sa PCCL yung improvement ni Rabeh which showed nung nagstart ang UAAP..

Meron sa Cable sa BTV..di ko lang sure kung meron sa local TV..
